I had a busy week. I didn’t really bother to keep up with things as well as I usually do.
The highlights of this week include emptying a fish tank with a cup and dragging it home in a taxi. Well, after a taxi finally showed up. It was called 3 times before we found a Korean to ask for a taxi. Then it showed up in less than a minute (after waiting in the cold for over 30 minutes). Amazingly, I did not kill myself or the fish. Zombie guppies! And I also learned that spaghetti, tomato sauce, and tuna isn’t too bad of a combination.
Thursday night I had Korean lessons. I really hate the ‘eo’ sound. It sounds similar to an English ‘u’ like ‘seon’ sounds similar to ‘sun.’ But it’s not the same. But I learned a plethora of words that I promptly forgot. Except ‘mol rai oh’ which means I don’t know. I figure that’s an important one to remember. More so than boy or girl or teacher. Another girl from Middle School was already there and she was highly amused at my attempts at pronunciation. Until I told her to go at it with English- haha. And I told her ‘to be able to’ was a really awkward and unnecessary thing to know in English (it was in her book). Example: In the future (puture), we will be able to use cars that fly and eat pills for all of our needs. WTF? Really? Why not, In the future, we will use cars that fly and eat pills for all our needs? Blahaha, whatever. I was also really amused when the girl, Chae Lim, asked me the typical Korean questions, then ask what are some rude questions in America… um, all the questions you just asked me! Haha. Then we had a lovely dinner of fried chicken, French fries, rice cakes, mustard, and daikons (moo! Er radish). It was surprisingly good and there were no bones in the chicken.
Friday I met up with the Dogye people to go to a farewell dinner for the girl going home. We got a new Kiwi—I mean, guy, who’s replacing here. He seemed pretty chipper for being fresh off the boat so to speak. We went shopping at Home Plus then went to dinner. It was spicy but really, really good. It was chicken, cabbage, pepper, rice cakes, and cheese… mmm. Afterwards, we went to Bud Bar and just hung out, which was cool. I opted out of the soju fest and The Fear [of the Soju hangover] and went home.
Saturday I went with the other Dogyinites to a soccer game in Taebek. I’m actually pretty fond of Taebek; I kind of wished I was placed there instead. It’s decent sized with some nice Western stuff and more foreign teachers and skiing! But its also much colder there because its higher up the mountain. The guys played soccer and basketball. Basketball is definitely an Americas game, haha! Afterwards, I went out with a few of the others to eat dinner at Mr. Pizza. We were joined by the party hardies later on. It was expensive (10, 000 w each—about $10) but it was so good. It was real western pizza, not the weird Korean pizza, although the supreme did have corn on it… Then we went to a nice coffee shop across the park called Certo. It was pretty sweet. And the coffee and cheesecake I had was totally worth another 8, 000 won. I was definitely splurging!
Sunday I went to church. Shut up peanut gallery, that wasn’t a typo. Yes, I went to church. I couldn’t understand a blessed thing, but thankfully I can sight read music. I didn’t know the words but I could hum the notes. Although it went on forever and ever. We had lunch and then a coffee break (I had hot chocolate—it was very sweet but good) and listened to Eun Hee (on the piano), her brother (with a guitar), and Chae Lim sing/play some songs. I was feeling tired and lazy from Friday and Saturday, otherwise I would’ve gotten up to translate the lyrics and sang with them. After church ended (finally!) I was invited to eat dinner with the family. I agreed and ended up helping decorate the church for Christmas and having ‘black noodle soup.’ Then I had this really good ginger-honey tea. It burned though. Definitely not something you want going down the wrong tube.
